Responsibilities
-- All of WYSC’s coaches are volunteers.
-- You only need to dedicate about 2 hours a week. One hour for practice and one hour for games.
-- Coaches please contact your registrar specifying your preferred field and practice day. This request is not guaranteed (it will depend on field availability). Deadline to submit your preference is 3 weeks before the start of practices.
-- At least two weeks before practices start, contact your players. Introduce yourself and explain to your parents when and where practices will be held; what children should bring to practices and games; any other expectations you may have.
-- On March 29, at 5:30-7:30 p.m., pick up uniforms for the players who have ordered them at the Warrenton Community Center (formally Central Elementary School).
-- Check your team schedule and make sure your team parents know how to check it. Look for situations where your team and the opposing team will be wearing the same color. If any of those situations occur, and your team is the home team, let the parents know what color your team will be wearing that day instead of their regular uniforms.
-- If you like, ask for someone to volunteer as a “team parent” to organize snacks and smooth communication.
-- Attend coaches’ clinics offered by WYSC during the season. (See below.)
-- Hold one practice each week and attend 8 games on Sundays throughout the season. Coach your squad to the best of your ability, calling on your reserves of knowledge and patience. Make practices fun, make them productive. And don’t forget your sense of humor!
-- Be a good sport and help your players grow in their abilities, emphasizing teamwork and sportsmanship.
-- Register to call in scores to a special phone number. After every game, winning coaches will call in their scores and the web site will be automatically updated with scores and standings.
Coaches’ training
Coaching a recreational team does not require previous soccer experience. WYSC is dedicated to providing volunteer coaches the soccer training required to coach a recreational team.
In an attempt to better prepare all volunteer coaches, WYSC requires all volunteer coach attend age-appropriate soccer certification clinics.
The entry level clinic "F" is only 6 hours and it is usually done from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a Saturday or Sunday.
Coaches who need to attend a clinic can find a list of all currently available clinics at the VYSA site.
or contact WYSC directly by e-mail or by phone at (540) 347-7289. WYSC will pay the full cost of all coaching clinics attended by WYSC’s coaches. See clinics available for this season at training page or contact club director.
This year for the first time, coaches’ clinics will be held during the season. Experts will work with coaches, giving guidance and coaching tips.
